REVISED plans for a housing development in a rapidly expanding village near Darlington have been condemned by the parish council.

Middleton St George Parish Council wanted to see amended plans for 34 detached houses and 32 flats before a site visit next month.

Mandale Properties wants to build the properties on former industrial land north of Yarm Road.

But villagers say the roads and the local school will not be able to cope with the population increase.

Last week, councillors deferred a decision on the scheme until after a site visit next month.

But members of the parish council this week reiterated their opposition to the plans, even though minor changes have been made.

They will be hoping to persuade Darlington Borough Council to reject the application when it comes up for discussion on September 6.

The developer has agreed to make a financial contribution toward an extension to Middleton St George Primary School.

This would be needed because the school is already over-subscribed and growth is expected to continue until 2011.

Mandale Properties will also be asked to make a contribution to the cost of improving public transport links to the site, if the scheme is approved.
