Darlington Arts Centre is one of the buildings of historical and architectural interest which will be open to the public on National Heritage Open Day next month.
The bulk of the history of the building lies not in its existence as an arts centre, but in its former use as a teacher training college.
In trying to piece together the history of the building when it was used as an educational establishment, Arts Centre staff are appealing for anyone who attended the college to come forward with details, anecdotes or photographs from their time their.
Arts Centre spokeswoman Chris McIntyre said: "We are fortunate enough to have been given photographs and snippets of information from visitors to the building over the years.
"We can establish certain things about how the building has changed, but we are particularly interested in anecdotal information.
"We would love people to jot down their memories or come along and walk around the building with us, pointing out the former use of some of our rooms."
