THREE pubs are to be commended for their quality after a series of police and council inspections.

Officers from North Yorkshire Police and Harrogate Borough Council carried out the stringent checks on premises in Harrogate town centre recently.

And as a result, "safer enjoyment of alcohol in licensed premises" charters will be awarded to Edwards, Yates' Wine Lodge and The Rat and Parrot.

North Yorkshire police licensing officer, Sally Fortune, said: "Rigorous checks have been carried out to ensure that licensees are complying with alcohol licences, entertainment licences, planning consents and that fire safety and food hygiene regulations are observed.

"On top of this, they have also been checking doorstaff registrations and the promotion of proof of age schemes, anti-drug and drink-driving initiatives, along with checking internal CCTV systems."

Council safer communities coordinator, Mel Greaves, said: "The joint inspections are a good example of partnership working.
