A DEVELOPER has unveiled controversial plans to build homes on a landmark hill on the outskirts of Sunderland.
Bowey Homes wants to build 15 two-storey houses and 45 five-storey flats on Humbeldon Hill, off Durham Road.
Company spokesman Paul Robson said: "If this is approved we see it as a landmark for Sunderland.''
Sunderland City Council says the scheme breaches its local plan.
And residents have voiced opposition. David Miller, of Ashbrooke, said: "I think it's an absolute eyesore.''
The council is awaiting comments from Durham Wildlife Trust and English Nature before deciding whether to give planning permission.
