ENGINEERS may have to work throughout the night as part of an operation to restore the flood-hit Mercury Bridge, at Richmond.

North Yorkshire County Council confirmed yesterday that a drilling rig may have to carry out night work to strengthen the bridge's central pier, from September.

Steel support girders for the 154-year-old bridge, devastated by flooding of the River Swale in June, are arriving to support the damaged arches.

The girders will be put in place by a 300-tonne crane, and this phase of the project is due to be completed by the end of August.

County council officials say the full restoration of the bridge is still on course to be finished in December.

Environmental services director Mike Moore said: "There has been fantastic cooperation from everyone involved.

"Some very impressive work has been done to progress the scheme as quickly as possible."
