THE North-East's biggest shopping centre has unveiled a new closed-circuit television system to combat crime.
More than 40 cameras have been installed at Gateshead's MetroCentre, giving 100 per cent coverage of shops.
The cameras can rotate 360 degrees and can zoom in over large distances.
All fire and intruder alarms have been linked to the cameras, including the Shop Alert scheme which allows retailers to tip off security staff about crooks operating in the area.
Thieves will be monitored by staff at a central control in the heart of the MetroCentre.
General manager Ron Woodman said: "We are delighted with the installation of the new system.
"We are always looking at ways of keeping any criminal activity to a minimum, and we feel the CCTV overhaul will help significantly in doing this."
