AN outdoor pursuits course for Darlington school-leavers has not had many takers because people do not realise it is free.

Organisers of the scheme for 16-year-olds say they have had numerous enquiries, but many are asking about costs.

A spokeswoman for Darlington Borough Council, which is running the scheme with Darlington Outdoor Pursuits Club, said: "Although they're free, people aren't booking them. We are getting phone calls, but everyone asks how much they cost, and I think people are being put off because they don't know it's free."

There are two residential courses, each lasting a week, offering activities including caving and climbing. There are still a number of places available.
