Willlington League

Ian Richardson of Hunwick Club added the League Singles title to his Player of the Year Award when he came through the Finals played at Oakenshaw Club.

In the semi final Richardson beat Tony Leighton of Oakenshaw Club in the decider when Leighton went for a clearance but ran out of position, leaving Ian to take victory with a good clearance.

In the other semi final Stephen Burke of Howden Australian beat Andy Carr of Hunwick Quarry Burn 2-0. In both games Carr went out to clear the table from the start but ended up suffering from snookers.

The Final was won by the greater experience of Richardson as Burke left himself too much to do in both frames.

The League holds a meeting tonight in Willington Football Club when the major item on the agenda will be the organisation of the Presentation Evening.

Crook League

With the Olde Horse Shoe A nine points clear at the top of the First Division the battle for the runners-up spot was not solved when the third placed, Crook Belle Vue entertained second placed, Royal Sun A. Belle Vue had two points from David Stephenson and one each from John Mason, Steve Hunter, John Warriner and George Pakes. The Royal Sun replied with two points from Kevin Wright and Gary Butterfield with Nigel Watson adding one, with the doubles being shared. This left the Royal Sun trailing by one point but they forced the draw when Simon Bowey beat Ian Hodkinson in the final frame. This leaves the Royal Sun one point ahead of the Belle Vue Club with one game to play.

The Olde Horse Shoe B are 22 points clear in the Second Division with the Royal Sun B nine points ahead of the third placed, Surtees.

Bishop Auckland League

Ithe quarter finals of the team Knock-Out the third placed Bishop Auckland King's Head entertained league leaders, Crook Olde Horse Shoe. In the singles the King's had two points from Warren Stamp and one each from Mal Parry and Bob Chambers. The Shoe moved into the lead with two points from both Cliff Owen and John Mason with one each from Steve Hunter and Dave Leighton. The Olde Horse Shoe clinched a semi final place when Cliff Owen and John Mason beat Kevin Watson and Bob Chambers in the doubles.

Second placed Bishop Auckland Derby entertained Spennymoor Pit Laddie and had singles victories from Kevin Stewart and Paul Willey with two each and one each from Chris Peacock and Michael Hoggart. The Pit Laddie's singles points came from Wayne Harris with two and one each from Shaun Archer and John Ramage. The derby clinched the win when Andrew Delve and Paul Willey beat Wayne Harris and Tony Porter in the doubles.

Tow Law League

Sunniside Moss Inn had a very good week for they scored two home victories. Against Tow Law Football Club they had singles wins from John Beveridge, Terry Carter and Terry Taylor while the footballers replied through Arthur Henderson, Keith Muse and Charlie Donaghy. The Moss edged through to victory when Norman Spence and Harry Nixon beat Terry Ginty and Billy Lyle in the decider.

In their other rearranged match the Moss went one better when they beat the visiting Cornsay Royal Oak by three points. The Moss singles points came from John Beveridge, Terry Taylor, Norman Spence and Harry Nixon, while Terry Platt and Keith Duffy replied. The Moss took two of the three doubles.

Sunniside Comedian lead the table by a single point from Tow Law Station, who have a match in hand. Lanchester King's head are a further four points adrift of the Station.

National CIU Singles Championship

Ithe quarter finals of the National Championship the Ferryhill pair left in the competition have had mixed fortunes. Steve Wray had the good luck to come out of the hat first and will now be at home to Steve Webster of Garrfield Club, Barnsley. Andy Seal failed to pull a home draw and he will have to play John Strange at the Westhouse Club in Alfreton, Derbyshire.

CIU Pairs Championship

CIU Singles Championship

Ithe round robin semi final, played at Meadowfield, Peter Laverick of Crowtrees was unable to attend so three players fought for the right to take the two Final places.

The two Tow Law players, Heppell Hodgson and Charlie Donaghy were drawn together with Donaghy managing to build up an early forty points lead and, despite a late burst from Hodgson, won by 26 points.

John Warriner of Crook Belle Vue then had to play Donaghy and never got settled to the speed of the table and lost by 81 points.

The decider for the second place in the final was very close as both players moved about twenty ahead only to be overtaken. Eventually Hodgson needed eleven for the game but Warriner, who had settled to the table speed, came from behind to move two points short of victory with a 26 break. He scored the two points at the next visit to win by eleven.

The semi final contestants in the other round robin are; Fred Lintern, Willington, Arnold Fleming, Hunwick, Jim Alcock, Wingate and John Bate, Hunwick who will play at Leeholme.

CBSL League

Lune Street, languishing at the foot of the table all season, achieved a shock 3-0 win at top placed Marske WMC to throw the title race wide open again. Allen Hebden, playing his first game of the season, spoiled Andy Mackay's unbeaten record with a 150-110 win to put the visitors ahead, before Neil Grainger scrambled the second game 150-141 against Geoff Unthank. The last game, between two of the best players in the league, saw Ron Bickerdike win by the narrowest possible margin, 150-149, to clinch the whitewash.

Redcar WMC took full advantage of the leaders' slip, beating hosts Saltburn Cons. by the same margin. Brian Norris starting the rout with a 150-124 victory over Ces Wilson. Dave and Gary Beckett completed the visitors win with scores of 150-117 and 150-99 respectively against Mike King and John McCabe.

Meanwhile Lakes SC improved their record with a 2-1 home win against Carlin How WMC, Andrew Shelley the only player to win for the visitors with a 150-119 result against Gilly Hartshorn in the first game. John Hartley compiled a 45 break in his 150-105 win for the home side against Mark Earl, before Michael Donnelly beat Eric Wheatman 150-108.
