A HAVE-A-GO parish councillor is nursing two broken feet after tackling a burglar who broke into his holiday apartment.
Mike McBride, who is a member of Middleton St George Parish Council, near Darlington, shattered both heels when he jumped over a wall in pursuit of the burglar on the first day of his holiday in Tenerife. He had woken up to see a man examining items on a bedside table in the apartment.
Coun McBride chased the man but ended up in agony after he jumped over a 1m high wall which had a 2m drop on the other side.
After a week in hospital, he decided to see the holiday out for the sake of his wife Joyce, son James and the friends who had gone with them.
Both his heels are fractured and he is confined to a wheelchair while he recovers.
"With hindsight I think I was a bit stupid, but when you wake up and see someone an arm's length away it gets the adrenalin going," he said.
