THIEVES operating in villages around Darlington have been targeting car airbags.
At least six vehicles were attacked in the Hurworth area overnight on Thursday and Friday, two weeks after three cars suffered similar thefts in Neasham.
Police believe there may be a market in the area for the devices, which cost between £150 and £500 to replace, but warned they may also be dangerous.
Each airbag carries a small explosive device, which requires those who sell them to be registered under the Firearms Act.
Detective Sergeant Alec Francis, of Darlington police, said: "They are dangerous things, if they do go off unsupported by the steering column."
Det Sgt Francis said that unfortunately there was very little motorists could do to deter the thefts.
He said there also appeared to be a tendency for the thieves to target Peugeot and Citroen cars.
Anyone with information about the thefts is urged to contact Darlington police on (01325) 467681
