GRENADES used by the SAS have found there way into the hands of thugs, police fear.
Two explosions from the thunder flashes were heard on Friday night in Wear View, South Hylton, Sunderland.
Police have warned that the explosives - which can be bought for £20 on the Internet - could kill or injure.
They are usually used in Army training exercises and are used to disorientate and deafen enemy forces.
Inspector Neil Willis, of Sunderland police, said it was likely the grenades were coming into Britain through routes used by firearms smugglers
