A MARKET is celebrating its 690th anniversary on Saturday by encouraging stall holders to wear fancy dress.
All 150 stalls on the Saturday market in Stockton High Street are expected to join in the fancy dress competition.
The best dressed stall or stall holder will be presented with the Brian Hodgson trophy and £200. There will also be prizes for second and third.
From 10am, street entertainers, a face painter, a balloon modeller and a Punch and Judy Show will make sure the children are entertained while the adults shop.
Colin Watson, Stockton Borough Council's market manager, said: "Stockton market is always a lively place to be, but the annual fair creates a special atmosphere.
"Everyone gets involved and it is a super day for both young and old. There is not a better way to celebrate."
The market history can be traced back to 1310, when Bishop Beck of Durham granted a charter for a Wednesday market.
