A NEW day centre is helping older people indulge in new activities and interests, while keeping their independence in the community.
Durham County Council has joined forces with Newcastle-based charity St Cuthbert's Care to establish the Blackhill Day Centre in the hall of St Mary's Church, near Consett.
Durham social services team manager for older people Paul Copeland said: "By basing the centre in the heart of the community we are aiming to help older people to remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible and improve their quality of life.
"The new day care service further reinforces our commitment to partnership working to benefit local communities."
The new centre, which can cater for 12 people a day, is managed by St Cuthbert's Care, with clients assessed and referred by Durham Social Services.
Activities are based on user needs and wishes, and include art, quizzes, music, gentle exercise, current affairs, bingo and outings
