Darlington Woodlands member Anne Anderson was the toast of Durham County after returning from the English Women's Bowling Association National Finals at Leamington Spa as the winner of the blue riband event, the four bowl singles.

Anne, a past winner of the National Fours in 1984, was a 21-12 victor in the final over Janet Green from Dorset's West Moor club.

The Darlington bowler's closest encounter came in the semi-final, where she was a 21-19 winner over Cindy Edmonson, representing the Skelton (Cumbria) club.

In the third round Durham's newest champion gained a 21-12 success against her county colleague Susan Kitching, of Spennymoor, and in the quarter-final scored a 21-13 win over Gill Lloyd, of the Malvern Manor Park club, of Worcester.

l DURHAM'S hopes of early success at the English Bowling Association national Finals at Worthing were dashed when the White-le-Head quartet of Brian Harris, Bill Delaney, Chris Palmer and John Leeman were beaten in the second round.

The Stanley rink had gained a comfortable 25-9 first-round victory over the Christchurch club, of Hampshire, but went down 20-13 to Crediton, of Devon.

l THE Hartlepool Town Show open pairs, under the banner of Newcastle Building Society and supported by the Jacksons Landing shopping complex and the Town Council, was won for the second year in succession by Jeff Muncaster and Peter Noble, from the Horden Colliery Welfare club.

The reigning champions won the final - cut to 15 ends by the bad weather - 12-9 against Albie Muir and Dave Andrews, of South Durham Sports Club.

The losers won six of the last seven ends, but were restricted to a single counter on each occasion.

The prize for the women's pairing progressing the furthest went to Kath Marley and Astrid Knox, representing the Norton club.

Anne Eglintine, of Owton Lodge, was the only lady to reach the second day, with husband Peter, and was unfortunate to be pipped at the post, 15-13, for a place in the semi-finals.

The £950 prize-money and handsome cut-glass mementoes, plus the Alec Dunlop Memorial Trophy, were presented by Christine Walton, of Newcastle Building Society, and Lisa Hall, of Jacksons Landing
