PERMISSION to install a metal sculpture outside the Greenfield Community and Arts Centre, in Newton Aycliffe, has been granted by Sedgefield Borough Council.
The three metre sculpture will consist of a series of geometric shapes made out of steel plate.
It will stand south of the junction with Alston Crescent, on the opposite side of Greenfield Way.
Money for the sculpture has come from an Arts Council National Lottery grant. Help has also been provided by Northern Arts.
A group of local people have led the project.
Nottingham artist Paul Lewthwaite has been commissioned to create the work, which is under construction in a Newton Aycliffe factory.
Mike Thornton, headteacher of Greenfield Comprehensive School, said: "He consulted widely with local groups to gain their ideas about the centre and life in Newton Aycliffe."
The sculpture is one in a series of works of art which will stand near the community centre
