Members of Sir William Gascoigne's Fellowship recreated the colour and atmosphere of medieval jousting in the castle grounds over the bank holiday.
Jousting began in the 11th Century when combatants would charge at each other with sharpened weapons. The deadly pastime, re-enacted in all its glory by the enthusiasts, was refined with the addition of blunted lances in the 14th Century.
Visitors to the English Heritage site also saw a display of falconry.
Medieval music was played in a living history encampment, which featured crafts, cooking and combat displays.
