UNLESS the new Countryside and Rights of Way Bill goes through Parliament with "sensible" amendments, there will be conflict in the countryside, a pressure group has claimed.
The Countryside and Rights of Way Bill seeks to allow open access to mountain, moorland, heath, down and registered common land. This covers thousands of acres in North Yorkshire.
Regional director of the Country Landowners Association in North Yorkshire, Dorothy Fairburn, said: "Improved access to the countryside can only be achieved with the cooperation of all interested parties working together.
"That is why the CLA is supporting sensible amendments to the Bill in the House of Lords.
"It is important to get this legislation right before it reaches the statute book. Otherwise it will lead to conflict in the countryside.
"To get this Bill wrong will be a severe retrograde step, perhaps an irretrievable step, but one which would mislead our countryside visitors."
