PLANS for a reunion of former Consett steelworkers have been given a National Lottery cash boost.

The undisclosed sum will help organisers to stage a reunion of former steelworks garage depot workers on Friday, September 15.

Leadgate Social Club will host the reunion that will include entertainments, a buffet and a photographic display of the works.

Cash for the event comes from the Lottery's Millennium Festival Awards For All scheme as well as Derwentside District Council's arts and community initiative fund.

Billy Robson, Consett YMCA coordinator, who has helped to organise the event, said: "The town would not have existed if it wasn't for the steelworks, so it is vital that we celebrate it, especially as it's now 20 years since its closure.

"The display of old photographs in particular is going to be popular. We still want people to send in their old photos of the steelworks depot - they will be copied and returned of course.

"The reunion itself should be a night not to be missed."

Once complete, the display will be on view at Consett YMCA from September 18-22.

Anyone with old photos and momentoes of the steelworks can contact Billy on (01207) 502654/80.
