A BATTLE of the bands taking place in the North-East will mark the national launch of the Government-backed Millennium Volunteers project.
The project, which is being funded by the Department of Education and Employment, aims to encourage youngsters to take up voluntary work. Volunteer groups have already been set up in areas such as Darlington, Sunderland and Northallerton.
On Thursday, September 7, volunteers will gather from across the region for the launch at The Alexandra, Grangetown, Sunderland, which will include a photo shoot and a "battle of the bands".
Each millennium volunteer will have his or her picture taken, which will then be included on a piece of artwork for display in London's Tate Modern.
Local bands will be playing on the day and there will also be a disco, food and prizes.
Millennium volunteers, aged between 16 and 24, from across the region are being invited to attend for free.
They can take part in a wide range of projects such as sports coaching or DJ-ing.
