OLDER people are being invited to attend an information day in Newton Aycliffe to find out about crime prevention.
Although statistics show that older people are not more at risk of crime than any other group, many are afraid of being a victim of crime and can feel vulnerable.
Age Concern has organised an information day to help local people guard against the worries of crime by finding out what help is available to ensure their homes are secure.
The information day and exhibition is being staged at the Pioneering Care Centre, in Burn Lane, Newton Aycliffe, between 10am and 2.30pm on Thursday, September 7.
Everyone who attends the event will receive a free package containing a Crime Alert at the Door notice for pensioners to keep by their front doors.
The notice, which warns callers that they will be asked for identification or requests that they make a return call, has been produced by Age Concern in partnership with Durham Constabulary.
Members of Age Concern Durham County and other local organisations will be available at the event to talk about activities and services they offer.
Staff from Age Concern Insurance, Energy Services, Aid Call for personal emergency alarms, and Funeral Plans will all be on hand to answer questions and provide quotations.
Anyone who takes out an insurance policy as a result of their visit will receive a free personal attack alarm, to help them feel secure while outside their home.
Information about home security measures will be available from the police, Homesafe, Community Rangers and Victim Support.
Age Concern will also offer a benefits checks for any older person who wants to make sure that they are receiving their full state benefit entitlement.
Free refreshments will be available throughout the day and transport can be arranged for anyone with mobility problems.
