MUSICIANS from across Europe are in the North-East taking part in an international academy, founded by renowned conductor and concert pianist Jean Bernard Pommier.
Durham is hosting one of the summer's biggest musical festivals, as part of the launch year of The Musike Academy, which organisers hope to take across the continent in future years.
Master classes, seminars, lectures and concerts by young musicians, most open to the public, are taking place during the week-long festival.
The high-profile climax of the musical extravaganza, expected to attract an international audience, takes place at Durham Cathedral tomorrow.
Jim Diamond, manager of Newcastle's Vermont Hotel, which is sponsoring the concert, said: "This is a great opportunity for the North-East to make a name for itself in the world of international music."
Tickets for the cathedral climax and other events over the weekend, are available from Durham Tourist Information Centre, in the city's Market Place.
Further information on the Musike Academy is available from Karen Scott, of Durham University Music Department, on 0191-374 7032, or David Whittington on 0191-374 6005.
