The Tees running six inches up at the start rose a further six during Sunday's NYSD Federation Norman Dunne Memorial, writes JEFF HERBERT.
Surprisingly the match length at Over Dinsdale fished quite well and Thornaby's Neil Coulthard led a string of double figured nets with 23.9.0.
Setting to work on waggler and lobworm the famous Wire Netting peg delivered six good chub boosted by a few chublets.
In-form John Whitehouse (Darlington) followed on 18.11.0. In the glides below Bowl Hole Corner, the loafer float utilising caster and corn accounted for all small chub.
Best of the rest: Gerry Bowes (Durham) 16.10.0; Dave Nicholson (Darlington) 15.5.0; John Leybourne (Haughton) 13.2.0
North-East teams experienced mixed fortunes during the recent NFA division three national on the River Nene near Peterborough.
Eighty seven teams of 12 competed and the NYSD Federation finished an impressive fifth with 702 points, an agonising two points short of a bronze medal and that was without practising.
Yarm AA finished 50th on 510 points. Meanwhile, Dick Clegg Metro, who had put in many days' practise and finished third and fourth respectively in the last two nationals, suffered a real body blow with relegation as extra water upset the form book.
Thornaby's Lol Bulmer made a winning return to the match circuit taking 13.2.0 from the Tees at Sockburn following a spell in hospital.
Fishing two above Girsby Bridge, Lol had little time to rest during the Thornaby AA event as small dace, roach and chublets responded to the waggler and caster in mid river.
Then nearest rival Darlington's Dave Firth netted 11.10.0 above West Wood as the proven waggler and caster approach once again accounted for mixed small silver fish.
Others: Mick Broadley (Yarm) 11.4.0; Anthony Alderson (Darlington) 8.15.9
Skimmers were crucial for the top trio during Yarm AA's Danby Cup on the Lower Tees.
Darlington Angling Centre's Dave Cooper edged ahead on 8.11.0 off the Wards Lane section. The pole at nine metres over chopped worm tempted skimmers averaging a pound, plus a perch to hold off Yarm's Dave Rowden with 7.13.0.
The Lower Reaches of the Ure around Boroughbridge were badly out of sorts for round five of the North Central League. Coloured all week, competitors had to rely on eels to gain team points.
Thirsk's Alan Miller secured the only quality fish, a bream of 4lb. Pegged below the Cricket Field, bomb and lobworm tamed two eels for 6.10.0 tying with Claro's Steve Wilson who returned all eels from the same area.
On the day Boroughbridge nudged ahead by a single point clear of Claro, but Knaresborough command a healthy 18-point lead overall.
League placings: 1 Knaresborough 331 points; 2 Ripon 313; 3 Boroughbridge 308; 4 Claro 304; 5 Thirsk 273; 6 Wetherby 245
