YOUNG thespians are making final preparations for a first performance of a new musical.

Stanley-based group A Spanner in the Works has written and produced the work, called Spin, by themselves.

They hope the theme of communities facing new challenges in a rapidly changing world will strike a chord with Derwentside audiences.

The musical is about a launderette which faces closure as a ruthless businessman attempts to buy the building and open an Internet cafe.

Facing defeat, the son of the launderette's owner and the gang of regular customers take to the streets to drum up support for their cause on behalf of the local community.

A Spanner in the Works secretary Matthew Barker said the excitment was mounting in the group ahead of the opening tomorrow night.

He said: "We're really proud of our achievement so far and are sure that the show will be another big success for the group."

The production, written by Scott Appleton, 28, and Matthew Barker and Sean Davidson, both 19, runs until Saturday.

Tickets are priced £3.50 (£2.50) for concessions. Call Stanley Civic Hall box office on (01207) 218899 or (01207) 280600 for details.
