A MILITARY jet was forced to make an emergency landing at Teesside Airport after the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit.
The twin-engined RAF plane had been on a military exercise yesterday morning from RAF Cranwell, Lincolnshire, when the pilot radioed through to air traffic control.
The airport's fire and rescue team was put on emergency standby, while four fire engines, three from Darlington and one from Durham, also rushed to the scene. Minutes later, the aircraft landed safely on the runway with all five passengers on board.
Teesside Airport spokesman John Waiting said: "There was a smell and some smoke in the cockpit and the aircraft decided to land at Teesside. All the emergency services responded, but were not needed as it landed safely."
The aircraft was examined by engineers before being allowed to take off again.
