A 48-YEAR-OLD man remained critically ill in hospital last night after being struck by a Metro train at the weekend.

The man, who has not been named, was hit by a slow-moving train and became trapped underneath it at the Monument Metro station, in Newcastle, at 9pm on Saturday.

A spokesman for operator Nexus praised the driver of the train, who slammed on the emergency brakes when he saw the man fall on to the tracks. Then, realising the man was underneath the gear box, the driver isolated the electricity.

A fire brigade spokesman said the front of the train was lifted with hydraulic jacks to allow him to be freed

A police spokesman said the incident was witnessed by bystanders and there were no suspicious circumstances.

The victim was last night undergoing a brain scan at Newcastle General Hospital
