Redcar'S darkest hour is to be commemorated with a memorial garden almost 50 years after 15 people died when the town was bombed during the Second World War.
The Zetland Club, which was opposite the cenotaph in Coatham Road, received a direct hit on October 21, 1941. The only memorial to what happened is a tablet commemorating the event on the gable end of the neighbouring house.
Now the site is to become home to a memorial garden with the Burma Star Memorial installed as a centrepiece, a plaque with the names of the 15 victims inscribed on it, two seats, and a grassed area, which will ensure that the event is never forgotten.
Anyone wishing to donate money to help with the expenses can send cheques to Eric Howden, branch secretary, Royal British Legion, 92-94 Coatham Road, Redcar, TS10 1RY.
