TORY leader William Hague has backed a campaign to save a threatened depot.
The Richmond MP is to write to BT over the future of its Northallerton depot, following fears that it could close as a result of a review of the company's operations.
Mr Hague, who met depot staff last week, said: "I entirely understand the concern felt by employees of the BT depot at Northallerton about its possible closure.
"Not only would it have devastating consequences for those employed there, but it would also have a severe economic effect on the area.
"I thought the employees made an excellent business case for remaining open and I will be making representations on their behalf to the chief executive of BT."
About 180 people work at the Darlington Road depot, used to store equipment which is sent out to engineers across the country. It has been under threat since BT opened a new distribution outlet at Lutterworth, Leicestershire, two years ago.
Vale of York MP Anne McIntosh, whose constituents also include workers at the depot, has also agreed to write to BT boss Sir Peter Bonfield
