PLANNING permission has been granted for flats in the centre of Darlington.
Howard Developments has received the go-ahead to build 11 one-bedroom flats at Clark's Yard.
The site, between High Row and Skinnergate, is used as a car park. But as part of its policy to improve the yards, Darlington Borough Council is keen to make better use of Clark's Yard.
Members of the authority's planning applications committee were told yesterday that eight letters of objection have been received from businesses in the yard, voicing concerns about parking and traffic congestion.
Councillors were told that car parking provision would not be provided for residents and that the flats would have no significant private residential amenity space.
Council officers believe that although the small car park has improved the appearance of Clark's Yard, it will only achieve its full potential if the land is developed for housing
