A COUNCILLOR has called for better access for the disabled at Sedgefield borough's leisure centres.
Councillor Tony Moore has asked Sedgefield Borough Council to prepare a feasibility report to see if facilities can be improved.
He wants to see a system similar to that in the council offices in Green Lane, Spennymoor, where doors open automatically at the push of a button.
Coun Moore said: "I have asked the council to prepare a report on providing these disability doors in our leisure centres, because our centres should be 100 per cent for the disabled. What is provided in the council offices is first-class, and the doors that they have there should be installed throughout the recreation centres."
He said: "My concern is that people in wheelchairs should not have to depend on waiting for people to push the doors open for them. I think we should be setting the example to everyone else. This is one of the fields where the council can put pressure on privately owned buildings."
Coun Moore made his request at a meeting of the council's scrutiny committee.
