A SUPERMARKET has boosted environmental learning at a nursery school by transforming part of its land.

Staff at the Asda store in Bishop Auckland arranged for the land at Wolsingham Nursery to be landscaped with a patio and pathway, and for a wooden play house and classroom for environmental projects to be installed.

The work was part of the supermarket's community project, called Get Involved.

They asked customers in the store to nominate worthwhile causes which would help the community, and Wolsingham Nursery School came top of the list.

Councillor Wilf Dobinson, vice-chairman of Wear Valley District Council, unveiled a brass plaque to mark the work done at the school.

"A lot of time and effort has gone into it. I was very impressed with the work Asda did, and the children love it," he said.

The work complements a project the nursery school has launched to transform their drab garden into a vibrant area for their children to learn and play.

The garden area will eventually feature vegetable plots, a butterfly garden, a picnic table, a log cabin, and a road safety area. Local businesses have rallied to offer money and help in kind towards the £7,500 project.

When it is finished, the youngsters will use it for a wide range of topics from recycling and planting to road safety and art.
