A TEAM of riders set off on a cross-country cycle route yesterday to boost the funds of the British Heart Foundation and Durham County Cricket Club.
Durham cricket fan John Wilson, who has returned to the saddle at the age of 76, made it his pledge in the club's benefit year to complete the coast-to-coast ride.
He put out an appeal to other cycling enthusiasts to join him, and it attracted interest from a dozen other riders, who are keeping John company on the transpennine route.
They set off from Whitehaven, in Cumbria, yesterday, dividing the near 140-mile route up into daily rides of between 27 and 42 miles.
Their aim is to finish at Roker, in Sunderland, on Sunday.
John, of Newton Hall, Durham, who underwent heart bypass surgery last year, has pledged to tackle all but the steepest climbs on the route
