ON July 25, pupils from St John's RC School summer school went on a visit to BBC Radio Cleveland, in Middlesbrough, to interview the presenters and see how a radio station functions.
First we were taken to the reception area, where we waited for the secretary, Victoria Sanderson, to show us around the station.
We were taken to a studio and then into the room opposite that had a giant glass screen that we could see through.
We could see presenter Alan Wright on air. He waved at us and even mentioned us on the radio.
Next we went to another studio that was empty. Inside there were several microphones and balls of tangled wires. The next studio was used for interviews, with groups of people or for conferences and meetings.
Mark Seaman, managing director, and presenter Matthew Davies came to talk to us about the station. For once it was Mark who was being interviewed instead of interviewing people himself.
We asked him what was the most embarrassing mistake that he had ever made. He told us that once he had laughed hysterically on air for two minutes.
One of our other questions was, "if you could interview anyone, who would you choose?"
He replied that he would have loved to interview Hollywood film star James Stewart. He also told us that he had once interviewed Elton John in Paris.
We found out that the building opened on April 12, 1984. I found our visit quite exciting and interesting. It was certainly one of the highlights of the summer school in my opinion.
