A RUBBISH tip is to stay open for five years longer than planned - after it emerged it wasn't filling up quickly enough.
The Tancred Quarry tip at Scorton, near Richmond, was opened in 1994 and was expected to take rubbish for six years.
But now Tancred Gravel Limited is applying for permission to keep it open until 2005 after the introduction of the landfill tax reduced the amount of waste being dumped.
North Yorkshire County Council environmental services director Mike Moore said changes to the landfill tax meant the site was now exempt, leading to an increase in the amount of waste being tipped.
He said: "The recent changes to the landfill tax regime, which means that the site is now exempt from tax, should assist in attracting suitable materials to the site."
Richmondshire District Council has approved the scheme
