THE first new school crossing patrol to be introduced by Darlington Borough Council has been launched.
The council took responsibility for the schools crossing service when it became a unitary authority in April 1997.
Bill Lynas, who previously managed the crossing in Carmel Road, is the warden at the new Fitzwilliam Drive crossing for North Road Primary School.
The crossing also serves schools in the Harrowgate Hill and Rise Carr areas.
There are a total of 44 school crossing patrols in Darlington staffed by 46 male and female wardens.
But the council's assistant road safety officer, Denise Caley, said new recruits were always welcome.
She said: "We have a great team of dedicated people, but there are always vacancies for standby patrollers, and these posts may lead to a permanent job."
For further information about these vacancies, contact Ms Caley on (01325) 388783.
