Redcar'S darkest hour is to be commemorated with a Memorial Garden almost 50 years after 15 people died when the town was bombed during the war.
The Zetland Club, which was opposite the cenotaph in Coatham Road, received a direct hit on October 21 1941. The only memorial is a tablet commemorating the event on the gable end of the adjoining house.
Now the site is to become home to a memorial garden with the Burma Star Memorial installed as a centrepiece, a plaque with the names of the 15 victims inscribed, two seats and a grassed area, which will ensure that the event is never forgotten.
Anyone wishing to make a donation can send cheques to Eric Howden, Branch Secretary, Royal British Legion, 92-94 Coatham Road, Redcar, TS10 1RY
