Barkston Ash League

Bardsey have failed to hold on to the First Division, losing out on the silverware by two points to Leeds side Whitkirk.

The Whitkirk side wrapped up the title, defeating Barwick by 78 games to 30 while Bardsey trounced Whitkirk's second team 82-26. But the last lap left Bardsey, captained by Adrian Lobley just short of their rivals.

Bardsey have won 12 of their 14 matches, losing two while Whitkirk have lost one of their 14 fixtures and drawn one.

Ensuring the title returned to Whitkirk in the championship-clinching match were Keith Dobson and Caroline Harding who secured three victories, along with a hat-trick haul by captain Neil Harvey and Sue Jenkins. Ann Rodger and Howard Lee won two of their matches and drew the other.

While celebrations continued at the top spare a thought for rock bottom Selby in Division Three. They did not win a one of their 12 matches. But they won praise on behalf of the league from secretary Steve Webster. He said the club had remained loyal to its juniors captained by the side's only regular senior player Richard Dawes, who is blooding young players for senior competition.

"It's not easy to lose week after week, but juniors are the future of clubs and Selby decided they would field a team to give their juniors experience. That must be applauded and recognised. The youngsters have picked up a lot of useful tips on the way and will be better players for their experience," said Webster.

Selby's junior loyalists included Kirsty Godwin, Francis Milajovic, Angela Howcroft, Robert Jackson and Caroline Benson.

End of season decisions included the relegation of Boston Spa and Sherburn from Division One. York All Saints and Thorner are promoted from Division Two with Copmanthorpe relegated. The second relegation spot will be decided between Alwoodley and Cliffe.

Yorkshire Junior Championships

There were more promising results for Jamie Perkins (Wetherby) at the South Leeds Centre.

Winner of the Under-10s last season, he was hoping to repeat his triumph in the U-12s final this time.

He started well against George Coupland (Hull) but his form collapsed dramatically in the second set as Coupland took the match 7-5, 6-0.

In the girls' U-16s Harrogate's Rebecca Sowden (The Academy) went out in the quarter final to the event's eventual winner Rebecca Fong (York) 6-2, 6-3.

Inter County Championship

Victory by a single rubber has taken Yorkshire's "golden oldies" back to the top flight of county tennis.

Yorkshire's Over-60s were involved in a grandstand finish to clinch promotion from Division Two of the championship. Everything hinged on the last match of the season against Cheshire at Chapel Allerton, Leeds.

Although Yorkshire lost the match 3-2 taking two rubbers gave the Tykes a one rubber advantage over the season against Cheshire.

Skipper Mike Rogers (Doncaster) paid tribute to the contribution Trevor Nuttall (Harrogate) had made to the side earlier this season, but Nuttall has been unable to play recently because of illness
