A SCHEME to re-open a closed meat cutting plant and abattoir in Bedale was revealed this week.

But first the group of entrepreneurial farmers behind the plan wants to know if they have the support of others.

Yorkshire Prime Quality Meats, which includes Mrs Judy Bell, owner of the highly successful Shepherd's Purse cheeses, revealed its plans on Wednesday.

It said it was committed to returning profits to the local farming community.

It also wants to develop and expand the marketing opportunities for identifiable Yorkshire meats, produced to the highest quality standards.

The company, which would market the meat, says there is already a demand for Yorkshire branded products and there would be direct marketing to the consumer.

However, before it goes ahead with the scheme it wants to ascertain the levels of interest from local producers of beef, sheep and pigs.

Those interested are asked to contact either 01347 838282; 01845 587155; or 01609 776786. Letters of support can also be sent to Yorkshire Prime Quality Meats Ltd, c/o The Bungalow, Station Yard, Alne, York, YO61 1TR.

l THE National Beef Association says it is a scandal that the contribution middle range abattoir operators make to uphold consumption of beef and beef products is consistently overlooked.

Mr Robert Robinson, Northumberland farmer and NBA chairman, said they accounted for 49-50pc of cattle slaughterings and were responsible for the delivery of beef to consumers who did not use the biggest supermarkets and burger chains.

The NBA wants the Meat and Livestock Commission to identify how it can take advantage of the sophisticated national supply and distribution network
