Work to upgrade and enhance the approach to County Durham's world heritage site begins today.
The work is designed to improve the appearance of Saddler Street in Durham City, and make it safer for pedestrians on their way to and from the cathedral and castle.
It will take eight weeks to complete the works.
Other phases of the scheme have included introducing street furniture and restoring the Magdalen Steps in natural stone.
The latest effort will involve the stretch of the street from the Magdalen Steps to Owengate, the cobbled approach to Palace Green. A traffic calming feature will also be installed.
The scheme is a partnership between Durham County Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the work is being done by the council's service direct department.
