WHEN North Durham teenager John Caulfield became the first member of his family to fly he did it with a difference - with no engine.
John, 14, an air cadet from Stanley, experienced three launches in a Viking glider while visiting 645 Volunteer Gliding School, based at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire. "It is really weird when you leave the ground for the first time," said John, who plans to visit RAF Leeming, also North Yorkshire, to fly in an RAF light aircraft, and eventually hopes to join the Raf.
John was accompanied on his trip by cadets Simon Critchlow, 14, and John Lister, 15, of 1409 Consett Squadron,
The Consett squadron meets on Monday and Friday evenings at its Parliament Street headquarters.
