ONE of the most popular dates in the calendar for the North-East's huge army of leek growers went ahead in the rain last weekend.
Dozens of the region's finest gardeners took their places at the annual leek, vegetable and flower show at Beamish Open Air Museum at the museum's Colliery Village.
And hundreds more put up with the dismal weather to marvel at the superb specimens before the grand auction of the food and flowers.
About 40 lots of vegetables and flowers were auctioned off after the prize giving.
Many of the holiday makers then had the chance to wander over to The Colliery Village Chapel over the lane from the show to watch children from north Durham's West Pelton Primary School, all dressed in period costume, add the final touches to the colourful autumn harvest festival display.
