RIDING stable staff beat the petrol blues by using their own horsepower to pick up their groceries yesterday.

Margaret Hedley, who has plenty of free transport grazing in the fields at Low Fold Farm, and her head groom, Lynne Bell, left their cars behind when they ventured out to the supermarket in Willington, County Durham.

On the way back it was the turn of their mounts, Billy and Matthew, to stock up on goodies at the Anne Hurworth's Dene Brook Nursery, in the High Street.

Margaret said: "Like a lot of people, we are saving our petrol and diesel for essential journeys so the horses seem the obvious way of getting about.

"We grow our own fuel in our fields so it doesn't cost a penny, and we never run out.
