THIS week is Fibromyalgia Awareness Week and support groups throughout the region are doing their bit to raise the profile of this little-known condition.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition causing widespread muscular pain, constant fatigue and memory and concentration problems.

Many people are so devastated by the illness - which is often brought on after some sort of trauma such as a fall, an operation or even childbirth - they have to give up work.

While research into the causes of the illness is continuing, so far treatment is aimed at reducing pain and trying to prevent sleep disruption.

Jenny Baker is a sufferer who runs the Stockton branch of the Fibromyalgia Association UK.

"Many sufferers find that belonging to a support group is beneficial, realising that there are others with the same problems can be very a great psychological help," she said.

The Stockton group meets monthly at North Tees Hospital and members are able to exchange views and experiences and get help and information from guest speakers.
