SPORTING pupils took to the water as part of an unusual biathlon event.

The competitors took to bellboats - twin-hulled 40ft-long craft which are paddled by up to ten people - along the River Tees, near Preston Hall, Stockton, before making their way through an orienteering course.

The event was organised by the Tees Forest in conjunction with the River Tees Canoe Association and Cleveland Orienteering Club.

Sarah Gibb, recreation officer for the Tees Forest, said: "Experience showed this year, as teams have had an opportunity to try both the bellboating and orienteering out at separate sessions organised for the schools by local clubs.

"We had the ingredients for a great competition in a very exciting environment."
