NEARLY 40,000 council tenants in Sunderland receive brochures today, detailing proposals to transfer their homes to the Sunderland Housing Group.

If the transfer of the council's 38,000 homes goes ahead later this year, the housing group would spend £302m on repairs and improvements over the next five years.

Tenants are to vote on whether they should transfer the ownership and management of their homes to the group.

Sunderland City Council's director of health and housing Peter Walls said: "This is a very important brochure. It is crucial that tenants read it to learn all about what they could expect if they vote for the transfer."

During the next few weeks, council officers will visit tenants' homes to answer questions about the plans.

If the transfer goes ahead, tenants could benefit from repairs, improved services, affordable rents, guaranteed for the first five years, and improved tenants rights.

A freephone number, 0800-028 5818, has been set up to inform tenants
