TWO Darlington schools are to get new science laboratories.
The town received £186,374 over two years as part of a £60m Government grant to tackle basic deficiencies in secondary school science accommodation.
A survey of schools in Darlington Borough Council's area found that Hurworth and Longfield comprehensive schools had a shortfall in science accommodation, while other secondary schools had inadequate laboratories. Some facilities were 50 years old.
Darlington council cabinet members agreed a programme this week which will see classrooms at Hurworth and Longfield schools converted into laboratories by the end of March 2001.
Any remaining money will spend on upgrading facilities at other secondary schools, and headteachers have been talking to local education officials to discuss their needs.
The programme will start as soon as plans and building regulations have been given approval
