THOUSANDS of Gateshead residents have been sent invitations giving them the chance to have their say on how the local council is being run.

Last year, Gateshead Borough Council formed a citizens' panel, called Viewpoint, to find out what people think about the authority.

It is now looking for a further 500 volunteers to give their views by completing questionnaires, telephone polls and attending focus groups.

Invitation letters have been sent out to randomly selected people on the electoral roll.

Councillor Bill Gordon said: "We expect there will be quite a demand to be a member of Viewpoint after the success of last year.

"Any information people give the council will, of course, be treated in the strictest confidence.
