DARLINGTON Golf Club is successfully swinging its way through the Millennium season. After winning the Northumberland and Durham County foursomes in April, the club lifted the prestigious Clark Cup at Eaglescliffe Golf Club last weekend for the first time since the competition was launched in 1953.
The team - John Kirkpatrick, John Howson, Geoff Charlton, Danny Leighton and Richard Bradley - beat Billingham 3-2 in the final after overcoming Whickham, Consett, Barnard Castle and Wearside on their way to the final.
"It really has been a successful year,'' said team manager John Stabler. "Winning the first trophy was a great feat, but to also get the Clark Cup and be the first winners in the new Millennium is excellent.''
In winning the Foursomes at Newbiggen, John Kirkpatrick and Geoff Charlton beat Durham GC in the Durham County Final before going on to beat Washington GC, who had earlier won the Northumberland event to be crowed regional champions.
Peter Manson has also been a member of the successful team.
