AN exhibition of 2,000 coloured tiles has been on display at the community art gallery in Greenfield Community and Arts Centre, Newton Aycliffe.
More than 1,500 pupils, aged from ten to 15, from schools around the region created the display. They included about 15 pupils from Greenfield Comprehensive School, who spent half a day with staff and young arts graduates at the University of Northumbria, in Newcastle.
Engineering, science and technology staff from the university discussed design, colour and texture on several themes, including the possible look of cities of the future.
The tiles which were produced have been touring the region, and will move on from Newton Aycliffe tomorrow.
Arts co-ordinator Jo-Anne Mason said: "The tiles are fantastic, they are so colourful. They have totally changed the look of the gallery."
The Tile 2000 project, funded by a Royal Society British Association Millennium Award and the University of Northumbria, enabled the youngsters taking part to use art to communicate scientific principles.
