THE winner of the 32nd Darlington Championship Dog Show could have been plying his trade across the Atlantic had it not been for a change of heart by his owner.

Martin Phillips nearly sold Norfolk terrier Jaeva Dutch Gold to an American breeder a year ago.

However, in a twist of fate, he changed his mind and the terrier, which is also known as Eric, stayed and picked up the best in show prize at yesterday's event, after winning the terrier group on Friday.

Mr Phillips, from Rugby, Warwickshire, said: "We were offered a lot of money for him, but decided to turn it down.

"Now, out of 60-odd champions I have already had, he turns out to be my first best in show.

"We were up against some really tough competition and there were some good group winners in there.

"So this is a big win for me and the breed - there are not many Norfolk terriers that have achieved this award."

Handler Andrew Gullick, from Norfolk, who co-owns the dog, said: "It is always a bit of a surprise when your dog wins.
