Witnesses are being sought by police following a vicious attack.
The victim was chased by up to 12 men, all wielding weapons, at about 11.30am on Saturday. Some of them were driving cars, one of which was used to knock the victim to the ground at the junction of Thorntree Road and Northumberland Road, Thornaby, Teesside.
One of the men was believed to be driving a silver-coloured 4x4. There was also a green 4x4 and another dark coloured vehicle.
The victim was severely beaten with hammers and sticks. He was left with numerous injuries and was taken to North Tees General Hospital, Stockton, but later discharged himself.
Detective Sergeant Tony Riordon, of Stockton CID, appealed for any witnesses to come forward, although the man is refusing to cooperate with police.
Det Sgt Riordon said: "We are investigating this from a public order point of view. We cannot just let incidents like this go unpunished."
